The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway is an inland route using rivers, bays, sounds and canals from Norfolk, Virginia to Miami, Florida ... And beyond! Technically, The ICW runs from Cape Cod in Massachusetts all the way to Brownsville, Texas on the U.S. / Mexico border, but the Norfolk to Miami portion is the one used by thousands of "Snowbirds" every year. Folks who flock south by boat in the autumn and return north in the spring. Many have made a lifestyle of ICW cruising. Of the thousands who do, they all had to do it the first time. We hope both novice and veteran Snowbirders will find this web site useful. Our intention is to make this site an interactive and ever growing resource for ICW cruisers. For example, click on "Useful Information" above. It will lead you to a list of suggested Free docks and anchorages indexed by Mile Marker. Also a listing of marinas, fuel docks and other facilities with comments and suggestions from Snowbirders like you. Soon you may make comments, suggestions and even warnings on the new, public "ICW Blog". This web log will be updated daily ... even hourly during the season. Many marinas have Internet access. The town of Oriental, North Carolina is a wireless "Hot Spot". Public Libraries all along the ICW allow visitors to get on line. With advances in cell phone capabilities it's possible to get connected even while underway! We hope you'll visit Snowbirders.Net often as you plan your voyage and as you join the great annual cruiser migration. |

Our boat, "Capella", is an Endeavour 37 Ketch with a 12 foot beam and 5 foot draft. She's not the most ideal boat for Waterway cruising ... a diesel trawler would be better ... but she's stable and comfortable. There's not much opportunity for sailing in the ICW (in general the waterway is too narrow for sailing) and the 51 foot masts mean we have to wait for bridges to open that many power boat cruisers can pass under. Her draft requires us to be more careful transiting shoal spots than is required of a more shallow draft vessel. But, we've been up and down the ICW for years without a serious mishap!
Anything "Capella" can do, a powerboat can do easier and faster! |
